Ethan:
We are using the Other Cohort field to code the enrollment status of
students on October 1 of each year in coordination with our Registrar and
our Institutional Research folks.  Financial Aid uses the data for IPEDS
reporting, etc.  I do an upload to Colleague from a excel sheet given to me
by Institutional Research, and I have a program to assign the designated
code with the start date of 10/01/YYYY.
The computed colums accessing the codes are particularly useful on the
Financial Aid suite files.

ORIG - first year students
RETN - enrolled students who were ORIG students last year
IR.ENR - all other enrolled students

These codes are entered into the valcode table INSTITUION.COHORTS (VAL
screen in ST)
