Hello JSU & friends!

A new year is coming swiftly. May it be good and sweet for us all.

The JSU has planned several opportunities to engage with the holiday as
a community on campus. All in-person events will be socially distant,
with masks required. I have written the schedule below and attached a
copy of our poster with the same information. As always, everyone is
welcome at JSU events; there are no requirements of Jewish identity,
background, or experience.

Friday, September 18

5:00 PM - Community gathering with music and discussion. Meet at rock
behind Merrill.
Center yourself before the New Year with a relaxed discussion on the
themes of the holiday. Sam will play some traditional melodies and blow
the shofar. We will light candles together.

6:00 PM - Rosh Hashanah evening service [through the JCA - Jewish
Community of Amherst - on Zoom].
Come together with other JSU students at the JCA's evening Rosh Hashanah
service. This event will take place on the grass in front of Saga, we
will be projecting the service onto a screen.

7:00 PM - Dinner Available for Pick-Up: Hot meals available on lawn
infant of Saga. Vegan and vegetarian options.

Saturday, September 19

There is no formal programming in the morning. If you are looking for an
option that suits your needs, please contact myself [reply to this
email] or Ellen [ellen.bernstein at comcast.net]. We'd be happy to help you
find an option that works for you.

3:00 PM - Torah Study: lessons on listening. Meet at rock behind
Merrill.
Al will lead a discussion about the Akedah (binding of Isaac/Genesis
22), the customary Torah reading on the second day of Rosh Hashanah. No
previous knowledge of the story is necessary; I'll send more info on
this tomorrow.

4:00 PM - Tashlich & Meditation: Meet at rock behind Merrill to walk to
Hampshire woods.
Tashlich is a ritual casting away of negativity/wrongdoing. Hannah will
lead a brief meditation on the lessons this can bring us.

Hope to see you soon!

L'shanah tovah (to a good new year),
Al Coffey
