"Tevye Transformed: Sholem Aleichem from Page to Stage and Film"

What are the literary origins of _Fiddler On the Roof_, one of the most
popular American musicals of all time? Marc Caplan will introduce us to
Yiddishliterature's most famous hero, Tevye the Dairyman, as he
negotiates the challenges of parenthood through encounters with the
modern ideas of his independent daughters. Caplan will explore how Tevye
is transformed, as he makes his way from Sholem Aleichem's original
stories to their dramatic adaptations - a 1939 Yiddish film produced
under the shadow of Nazism and, most famously, the Broadway and
Hollywood versions of _Fiddler on the Roof_. How might Tevye's evolution
provide a frame for interpreting shifts in Jewish culture over the past
century, as well as the enduring complexity and universality of Sholem
Aleichem's original vision?
