Dear Hampshire Jewish Students and Friends:
I need to make you aware of some changes that will be taking place for
the upcoming school year. As some of you were aware, I have been
looking for full time employment for the coming year, as my position at
Hampshire is only half time. Since it was uncertain whether or not
anything full time would materialize, my return to Hampshire in the fall
was up in the air when you all left campus.
As of now, it looks like most likely I will not be returning in the
fall, but for slightly different reasons. In a nutshell, Liza Neal,
Director of Spiritual Life, and , Dawn Ellinwood, Dean of Students have
been working on creating a new position for the College that will
incorporate the rabbi's duties as well as other duties. This new
position (which actually sounds quite exciting), is still half-time.
The new job title is Coordinator of Religious Identity and Political
Intersections. For a more detailed explanation about how the position
came about and what it's purpose is you should contact Dawn or Liza
directly. The important fact is, that since the job description differs
significantly from the Campus Rabbi job description, there needs to be
an open search process to determine the best person for the position.
Therefore, my position as Campus Rabbi will end tomorrow, June 15 (which
would have been my last day of work until Aug. 1 anyway) and the new
position will commence once someone has been hired. I am also eligible
to apply for the new position. Whether I will do so depends upon when
the job is officially listed and whether or not I have found new
employment at that time.
If you would like to talk to me further about the transition and your
thoughts, or if you would just like to stay in touch (which I would
love), you can e-mail me after tomorrow at
rabbisteve.nathan at gmail.edu. Of course, you can also look for me on
Facebook (a number of you are friends already). And again, if you would
like more information on what the new position will entail, how it will
impact Jewish students on campus or if you would like to have input
into the process, you should contact Dawn or Liza directly at
dellinwood at hampshire.edu or lneal at hampshire.edu.
Finally, I just want to tell you all how much of a joy and pleasure it
has to be a part of the Hampshire community for the past three years.
Should I indeed not return to Hampshire in the fall, it is my hope that
I will be able to come back visit at some point so that I can bid you
farewell in person and that many of you will indeed stay in touch.
Shalom/Salaam
Rabbi Steve (or Steve. Whichever you prefer! ;-) )
