 This fall semester, UMass Amherst Hillel is proud to host a one-credit 
course on Israel and the Middle East -- JS 191E: From Abraham to Oslo: A 
Brief History of the Middle East. We encourage students to register for 
this timely and important class and learn more about the broader context of 
the Middle East conflict. We also invite community members to attend the 
public lectures. Students from sister colleges are welcome to cross- 
register.

 Course Description:
 Course Number: JS 191E Instructor: Tal Ben Shahar Tues., 7-9 p.m., Seven 
2-hour sessions
Location: UMass Hillel House
 This course introduces students to the essential history of the Middle 
East conflict, so that they can gain a just and honest understanding of the 
current situation. The main themes that the course will cover are Jewish 
presence in the Middle East over the last 3,000 years, the birth and 
expansion of Islam, Jewish and other minorities under Islamic rule, ancient 
and modern Zionism, the birth of Israel, and Jewish and Palestinian 
refugees. In the context of the Middle East, students will discuss the 
notion of a civil society, individual rights, justice, compassion, truth, 
and rationality. The course will meet seven times throughout the semester.

TAL BEN SHAHAR – An international management consultant, veteran of the 
Israeli army, and U.S. intercollegiate squash champion, Tal Ben-Shahar is 
an expert on Israeli history and debating the conflict in the Middle East.
 Ben-Shahar graduated from Harvard College, studied at Cambridge University 
in England, and was named a Graduate Fellow at the Harvard Center for 
Ethics and the Professions. He is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Harvard in 
organizational behavior and consults internationally for multi-national 
corporations worldwide. The author of three books, most recently A Clash of 
Values: The Struggle for Universal Freedom, Ben-Shahar calls for liberal 
reform in the Middle East.
 Emphasizing principles and philosophy, Ben Shahar leads courses on how to 
understand the Middle East conflict and how to advance peace and justice in 
the Middle East by spreading civil society to a region that needs it. Ben 
Shahar is currently the Director of Training for The David Project, a 
Boston-based Israel advocacy organization.
