Pippa Holloway, Professor of History at Middle Tennessee State
University, will speak at Mount Holyoke on Monday night, March 28 on
"Felon Disfranchisement and Citizenship in American History." The talk
will take place at 7 p.m.in Cleveland I at Mount Holyoke.
The abstract of Professor Holloway's presentation is as follows:
Laws denying suffrage to individuals convicted of certain crimes were
revised in the post-Civil War South as part of a larger effort to
disfranchise African American voters. This lecture considers the
origins of these laws, their enforcement, and the experiences of
disfranchised individuals. These laws have shaped the national dialog
about fitness for citizenship and the qualities considered necessary
for civic participation. Many contemporary issues surrounding "felon
disfranchisement" -- including disproportionate racial impact and
partisan enforcement -- have historical roots in this earlier period.
Please pass this on to your students and anyone else you think might be
interested in Professor Holloway's talk.
