    <p dir="LTR"><span lang="en-us"><font face="Tahoma" size="2">The
          abstract of Professor Holloway&#8217;s presentation is as follows:</font></span></p>
    <p dir="LTR"><span lang="en-us"><font face="Tahoma" size="2">Laws
          denying suffrage to individuals convicted of certain crimes
          were<br>
          revised in the post-Civil War South as part of a larger effort
          to<br>
          disfranchise African American voters. This lecture considers
          the<br>
          origins of these laws, their enforcement, and the experiences
          of<br>
          disfranchised individuals. These laws have shaped the national
          dialog<br>
          about fitness for citizenship and the qualities considered
          necessary<br>
          for civic participation. Many contemporary issues surrounding
          "felon<br>
          disfranchisement" &#8211; including disproportionate racial impact
          and<br>
          partisan enforcement &#8211; have historical roots in this earlier
          period.</font></span></p>
