Hello! This week's GEO Digest will showcase a few study abroad programs
focusing on indigenous rights and survival as well as an important
scholarship opportunity for students who want to study abroad in Italy.
But first...
IMPORTANT DEADLINES and EVENTS!!
Nov. 13th: Spring '10 Enrollment Notification deadline for students
going on field study. For students doing an international field study
you must get a signature from the Global Education Office. Please call
or come in to make an appointment. Remember to come to the appointment
with your signed Hamp. Travel Waiver, travel registration with
Intl.-SOS, emergency contact info, your passport (or a copy of the front
page). and proof of intl. health insurance.
Field Study SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY!
Do you want to study abroad in Italy? The Sienna School for Liberal Arts
is offering full and half tuition scholarships. The Spring 2010
application deadline is Nov. 1st, you can download the forms the
website! To attain a scholarship, you simply attach an essay explaining
ho you would benefit from this scholarship. There are limited
scholarships available. For information about course offerings at SSLA

the office to see a course catalogue.
INDIGENOUS RIGHTS/ SURVIVAL PROGRAMS
Amazon Expedition: Oil, Media, and Indigenous Survival (Worcester State)
This January Term course, led by Worcester State faculty Carlos Fontes.
travels to Ecuador to explore survival strategies of Amazonian
indigenous groups in the context of globalization and the search for
oil. The course starts at Worcester State where students will be
oriented to the Sarayacu tribe's culture and way of living. The group
then travels to Quito, the capitol of Ecuador, for an overview of
Ecador's political and social climate. For the majority of the trip the
group will be staying the the village of Sarayaquillo where students get
to explore the surrounding area and learn about how this particular
indigenous group has worked to ensure the survival of their culture and

SIT Identity and Globalization Programs
SIT offers a multitude of semester study abroad programs whose academic
focus is on indigenous identity in a globalizing world. SIT programs
bring together small groups of students to participate in field based
experiential learning experiences. Undergrad programs have students
complete an independent research project while becoming immersed in
their locality through language classes, home stays, and field work.
These sorts of programs are offered in Argentina, Bolivia, China, the
Czech Rep., Ecuador, Fiji, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya,
Madagascar, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Oman, eru, Samoa, Senegal, Spain,
Tunsia, and Vietnam. Visit the SIT website for more information:

Study Australia: Justice, Rights and Reconciliation
This January Term program brings students to Australia to explore the
unique aspects of social and economic inequality, the rights of
indigenous people, and injustices perpetrated against refugee and new
migrant communities. Students area accommodated in furnished apartments
while in Sydney. Courses are taught by Study Australia staff and faculty
from Augustana College in Australia. For more info check out the
