Ulster and Ireland: History, Cultures, Identities.
A great course for anyone interested in Peace Studies or Irish history 
and the arts.
Dates: June 29–July 18, 2009
Application Deadline: March 1, 2009

Indigenous Australian Studies
Take advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity to study Indigenous 
Australian culture on the World Hertitage Listed Fraser Island! Students 
are based at University of Southern Queensland’s Fraser Coast campus in 
beach-front Hervey Bay (known as the world capital for whale-watching), 
but also spend significant time exploring the unique natural environment 
of Fraser Island and learning about the heritage and culture of the 
traditional Butchella community located there.
Dates: June 29–July 18, 2009
Application Deadline: March 1, 2009

South Africa: A Decade of Democracy and Beyond
Spend four weeks in the charming university town of Stellenbosch, 
ideally situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands of South Africa, 
surrounded by magnificent mountains, 20 minutes from the nearest beaches 
and just 50 minutes from Cape Town. Lectures, group discussions and 
field trips will cover topics including Introduction to South African 
History, Politics and Economics; Social, Legal and Cultural Landscapes; 
and an additional choice of one of the following three options: 
Botanical Diversity of South Africa: Cape Flora; Apartheid & After: 
Representations of South Africa in Art and Literature; or Understanding 
the HIV/AIDS Epidemic.
Dates: June 13 – July 10th
Optional Garden Route Field trip: July 10-15th
Application deadline: March 15, 2009

South Africa: Service Learning in Community Development
Spend five weeks in the charming university town of Stellenbosch, 
ideally situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands of South Africa, 
surrounded by magnificent mountains, 20 minutes from the nearest beaches 
and just 50 minutes from Cape Town. The program is aimed at developing 
an understanding of the historical background and current issues 
impacting on community life and problems in South Africa and 
experiencing it first hand through service to a South African community 
while earning academic credit.
Dates: June 13 – July 17 2009
Optional Garden Route Field trip: July 17-22
Application Deadline: February 27, 2009

Culture, History, Activism
Dates: June 26-August 6

A mobile program combining academics and participation in archaeological 
research and contemporary Mayan life.  In the lowland rainforest we walk 
to a remote Preclassic Maya site.  In villages beside spectacular Lake 
Atitlan we participate in ceremonies with Maya ritual leaders, learn 
medicinal plants with a Maya healer, study with Maya weavers, and 
volunteer in a Maya secondary school.

  >> BUTEX North American Scholarships 2009/10

BUTEX is now accepting applications for its North American Scholarship 
Programme 2009/10!*

The Scholarship is open to all undergraduate students currently 
registered at an institution in the USA or Canada.  To be eligible to 
apply you must have been offered a study abroad or exchange place at a 
UK university which is BUTEX affiliated.  The study abroad or exchange 
place must be for the academic year 2009/10 and must be for a minimum of 
one semester.

The value of each scholarship is £500 and will be paid to the winners 
once they have arrived and registered at their host university.
