Did you know… more that 1/3rd of Hampshire students study abroad?
Why do they go? Where do they go? What kinds of things do they do?
Hampshire Exchange programs span six continents & over 40 countries.
Hear from fellow students who have recently returned from study abroad –
and ask them anything you might want to know… What about Field Study?
How do I find the right program for me? When should I go? What’s the
best way to approach faculty? How do I plan, research, and prepare?
We’ll discuss how to start thinking about going abroad: researching
opportunities, choosing the right program, preparation, timing, and
applying. A semester studying off-campus can cost more or less the same
as a semester spent studying on campus? How do the finances work? Where
do I find additional scholarship opportunities? Learn about specific
funding resources for students of color and international students &
valuable short-cuts to searching for general study abroad funding.
This event is co-hosted by GEO and the Cultural Center

Exchange Programs. The deadline for these programs is *March 11* unless

 >> In May GEO is hosting 3 short-term field courses in Ireland, Turkey
and Czech Republic:

Ireland: Where Three Streams Meet: Exploring Celtic Spirituality
Faculty Leader: Bob Meagher
(May 18-30) This course—grounded in the disciplines of religious
studies, medieval studies, and Celtic studies—will comprise a field trip
to County Limerick and County Dublin in the Republic of Ireland from 18
to 29 May, 2008.

Turkey: Turkish Politics: Religion and Its Discontents
Faculty Leader: Berna Turam
( End may-June)
The field course in Turkey is extremely timely, as it will give us the
opportunity of hands-on research on the only consistently democratizing
state in the Muslim Middle East. The course has two major purposes.
First, it will provide evidence and knowledge on Islamic politics by
using secular Turkey ruled by the pro-Islamic government as an in-depth
case study. The second and more specific goal is to equip students with
theoretical insights and analytical and methodological tools to explore
the specific meeting points of Islamic and secular politics.

Identities, Cultures, Texts in East-Central Europe:
Prague and Kraków. Stories of Resistance and Authority
Faculty Leaders: Polina Barskova and James Wald
(May 20-June 14)
Two cities with complicated histories, rich cultures, and promising
futures will become case studies for this unique opportunity in global
education. Among the theoretical foundations of this course will be the
ever-shifting paradigm of center and periphery in relation to the
European political and cultural power. The overarching framework of our
program will be the dynamic of authority and resistance, particularly in
the modern and contemporary era: How and why do given groups attempt to
assert their authority? Why, when, and by what means do others resist?
This theme is particularly germane to territories whose historical
experience has been characterized by dependency.

Info session on Tuesday Feb 10 at 4:30 in East Lecture Hall, FPH
Other information will be available on our two summer programs:
Summer in China: Intensive Mandarin Chinese Program and Summer in
Greece: Kenchreai Archeology Excavation

 >> DIV III in Havana, Cuba

Have you thought about researching your DIV III in Havana, Cuba? Wanted
to go to Cuba during Div II but didn't have a chance? Went during your
DIV II and want to go back? Hampshire College offers students an

Havana, Cuba. In coordination with the Global Education Office,
Hampshire faculty, and academic partners in Cuba, students design their
own course of study to include the Spanish language; a seminar in

project with tutors that will count toward the Division II or III
requirement. The Fall Semester Program in Cuba is geared towards DIV III
students studying themes related to Cuban culture and history. Past
students have done DIV II and III projects on Photo, Film, Music,
Ethnography, Historical Research, and more. You can arrange to have one
of you Advanced Learning Activities to be conducted by the Cuban
faculty. Interested?? Contact your committee and the Hampshire Cuba
Program faculty (Margaret Cerullo, Carol Benglesdorf, Jackie Hayden,
