Hello everyone,

I'm a Division III student whose project is centered around the study of
gender and gender non-conformity in a medical context. I want to explore how
different ideas of gender are discussed and communicated between physicians
and their patients, especially patients who are gender non-conforming in
some way. As a large part of this project, I'm looking for people who
identify as genderqueer, transgender, transsexual, intersex, intergender,
genderfucked, etc, who would be interested talking with me about their
thoughts on sex/gender, their personal journeys of identity, and their
experiences with gendered bodies and health care.

I hope that this project will not only be interesting academically, but will
also be helpful to the queer community. I want to raise awareness about the
ways that personal narratives and medical/scientific ones often conflict,
and the ways that scientific authority and the very strong hegemonic power
it exerts can sometimes eclipse the embodied experience of a patient. I hope
that by telling me their experiences, the students I talk to will be helping
make a place for such experiences in health care.

If you think this might be something you'd like to participate in, or if you
have any questions, please contact me at cbo07 at hampshire.edu.

Thanks very much,
--Claire Oberholtzer
