Presentation and discussion (free and open to all)

"Climate Change and Freedom: Building a Sustainable and Democratic Society"
With Aaron Karp

Mon. 2/5 5-7pm
CEPA* office, 2nd fl. , Student Union
UMass

Humanity faces several ecological issues, headlined by climate change, which must be addressed over the next few years in order to preservecivilization as we know it. In this discussion we?ll look at why stopping
climate change is incompatible with economic growth and requires fundamental changes to our economy. We then explore the reality of concentrated power in our society that blocks these changes. Finally, we discuss the type of social movement we must generate that canbring about real democracy and the new society we need.

Aaron Karp studied neuroscience and Spanish at UMass and graduated in 2012. He then co-founded the
campus's fossil fuel divestment campaign. He spent the summer of 2013 biking through Massachusetts
communities with other young adults to speak about climate change and generate grassroots activism. In
late 2013 he organized student testimonials in support of a bill in the Massachusetts legislature that
would have divested state pension funds from fossil fuel companies. He is writing abook about the economic and cultural transformation needed in order to maintain a livable climate. Aaron advocates for a mass movement capable of bringing about a new society.
