Hello New Leaf & Climate Justice League Listserv People,
I'm forwarding a newsletter from Sustainable Umass about the inspiring work
happening there. There's great resources in the links and some fun events
like the "Talking Truth" event series and "New2U" Tag sale. Hope it's been
a great summer and we'll see you soon!
Best, Sara Brown

Fall semester kicks off with new solar installations, water conservation
efforts, the annual reuse tag sale, the new School of Earth and
Sustainability, more bike-share bicycles, and a whole lot more.

To help conserver water we ask that the campus community turn off faucets

The
university is currently installing 15,576 photovoltaic panels on six
buildings and in two parking lots. The new solar panels will reduce the
greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of 31,000 nonmetric tons of
carbon dioxide. The project adds to the campus’s solar portfolio, which
includes solar canopies at the Visitors Center and a solar hot water system
on the Central Heating Plant. MORE CAMPUS SOLAR

The
new Design Building, one of the first of its kind in the Northeast, is made
with a sustainable wood structure and joins the long list of green
buildings found on campus. Once completed, it will house the College of
Social and Behavioral Sciences’ Landscape Architecture & Regional Planning,
College of Humanities and Fine Arts’ Department of Architecture, and the
College of Natural Sciences’ Building Construction Technology program. CAMPUS

UMass
Amherst is committed to waste reduction. We use single-stream recycling to
collect bottles, cans, paper, and cardboard all in one bin. We recycle
packaging materials at service desks in residence halls and at the Amazon
bookstore. We collect small electronics for recycling at the W.E.B. Du Bois
Library and residence hall service desks. And we compost food waste in the
dining halls and in cafes across campus. #GoGreenUMass compost and
recycle! WASTE

In
April 2016, the university established a new School of Earth and
Sustainability (SES), which will serve as a central hub for a suite of
academic programs, research, innovation, outreach, and extension activities
focused on finding solutions to the complex, global environmental
challenges of the 21st century. SES brings together 18 undergraduate
programs and five graduate programs. DISCOVER SES
