HISTORIC PRESSROOM TO BE DEDICATED AT RENAISSANCE CENTER

Caxton Corner, the UMass Renaissance Center's new pressroom, will be
dedicated during a special gathering at the Center on April 11 at 4:00 P.M.
The Corner will house the Center's own Stansbury Press, one of the few
preserved and still in operation of the model invented by Abraham Ogier
Stansbury in the early 19th century. Philip Weimerskirch, former Special
Collections Librarian at the Providence Public Library in Rhode Island, and
a noted historian of printing in America, will deliver the keynote address.
For more information, e-mail renaissance at english.umass.edu or call

Though an American invention, the Stansbury press works in the same way as
Renaissance presses and will be used to train students and the public in
Renaissance printing. Caxton Corner is a gift to the Center from James and
Carol Kelly. The public is invited to the dedication and those in attendance
will be given a souvenir broadside, the first work to come off the press in
its new location. The press itself was a gift to the Center from the Museum
of Printing in North Andover, Massachusetts.

Master printer Carl Darrow from Historic Deerfield and Penni Martorell,
printer and Simmons College Graduate School of Library and Information
Science student, will be on hand to demonstrate the craft of printing on the
iron handpress.
