To members of the Centaur Society and other Pioneer Valley bibliophiles:

Having just learned that Terry Belanger, the director of Rare Book
School at the University of Virginia, will be in our neighborhood for
a brief visit next week, we have asked him to meet with our new
society and any other interested bibliophiles and make some brief
remarks about the current state of the rare books and special
collections world and of future RBS initiatives in the offing.

Please join us at an informal session with Professor Belanger at 4:30
pm on Monday, September 12, in the Special Collections and Archives
Department on the 25th floor of W.E.B. Du Bois Library at
theUniversity of Massachusetts. We'd like to stress that this will be
an informal meeting so you may come whenever you are able. We should
be out by 6:00 pm.

Certain recent developments have suggested to some of us that the
bookish world we have found so congenial, a world that comprises
scholars, book arts craftspeople, booksellers, collectors and library
adminstrators, is becoming increasingly, perhaps dangerously,
marginalized. As this country's leading educator of rare book
professionals Terry Belanger in uniquely qualified to offer
assessment and recommendation and, one hopes, succor. For a detailed
record of his career seehttp://www.virginia.edu/oldbooks/tbvita.html.

If you can make it please call one of the undersigned to RSVP. Hope
to see you at our first meeting of the season!

Rob Cox, University of Massachusetts (545-6842) Martin Antonetti,
Smith College (585-2907)
