Franklin Patterson Hall East Lecture Hall

The Hampshire College Center for the Book invites you to a film and
discussion:

"The Independent Against the World?
The small bookseller in the age of chain stores and the internet"

A screening of "You've Got Mail," starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan,
followed by a conversation with bookseller Nat Herold.

The film is "a romance in which superstore book chain magnate Hanks and cozy
children's bookshop owner Ryan are anonymous e-mail cyberpals who fall
head-over-laptops in love, unaware that they are combative business rivals."

In the film, love conquers all, but can "independents" and chains in fact
coexist? What is it really like to be a small bookseller today? What
distinctive benefits do independents provide for society? What threats and
pressures do they face?

Nat Herold (Hampshire entry class January 1974) of Amherst Books has been
selling books here for many years. He will share some of his experiences in
the trade and lead us in a conversation about the present state and the
future of the independent retailer.

Part of the Hampshire College Center for the Book film series, "Love and
Books."

We look forward to seeing you.
