THE OPEN SEMINAR

Talk by Simone Davis (Five College Women's Studies Research Center)

"How to Squash a Tell-All, 1933." As an ad man, Christian inspiration writer
and Republican politician, Bruce Barton proved one of the most influential
Americans of his era. His triumphs throw into stark relief the clamorous
tragedies of Frances King, a would-be author, ever-voluble fighter in her
own doomed cause, employee-mentee to Barton, his lover, and then his
blackmailer. My project is about the printed word. . . and the powers that
keep some words from ever seeing print. It's about a scandal that simmered
rather than boiled, about who can use publicity for gain and who cannot.
Moving between the juridical, journalistic, commercial and publishing
worlds, this small and seamy tale illuminates the links between spin and
suppression. In the present political and cultural climate, where exposure
and damage control dagger fight daily in the public eye, we find ourselves
living with Barton's legacy on more fronts than one.

Thank you.
We look forward to seeing you.
