Dear RACHEL RUBINSTEIN,

The SECURITY AND SOCIETY SUMMER SCHOOL (www.SRAS.org/security), hosted
by Collegium Civitas in Warsaw, Poland is now accepting application for
Summer 2017.

This SIX-WEEK SUMMER SCHOOL (MAY 29 - JULY 7, 2017) takes a broad but
intensive look at traditional and contemporary security issues. Using
Poland and Central Europe as case studies, students will gain a new
perspective on global issues. Summer 2017 courses will address security,
cybersecurity, history, criminal justice, cybersecurity, urban planning,
elites, identity/diversity/tolerance, and Jewish studies. Students of
Jewish Studies will find the following courses particularly relevant:

JEWISH HERITAGE
Poland once housed a majority of the world's Jews and today, 70 percent
of the world's Jews can trace their ancestry back to Poland. This course
will examine the triumphs and tragedies of Poland's Jews and acquaint
you with the burgeoning revival of Jewish culture now taking place in
democratic Poland. It will also examine the influence of the Polish Jews
on American culture and their contribution in forming the Israeli
identity. The course will be co-directed by Dr. Maciej Kozlowski, the
former Polish ambassador to Israel and Dr. Jolanta Zyndul, Senior
Historian at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

CROSSROADS I - THE HISTORY AND CULTURE OF CENTRAL EUROPE_ _
Through an understanding of history, this course offers a rich,
entertaining, multi-disciplinary, and comprehensive insight into the
culture, politics, and modern life of Central Europe. Study Central
Europe's important place in historical European conflicts, it's major
contributions to modern science and culture, and its deep Jewish
cultural heritage. It will look at Poland's post-1989 economic success,
its role in EU migration and ecological issues and other current events.

Between Hitler and Stalin
Travel through Germany and Poland, getting a close-up view of where WWII
started. Trace the rise of Nazi Germany starting in Berlin, with visits
to the Olympic Stadium and the Reichstag. Uncover the Third Reich's
exploits and horrendous atrocities across Europe at Auschwitz and
Warsaw. See firsthand how the area has rebuilt and attempted to heal
past wounds. View cathedrals and Teutonic castles along the way, and
hear from special guests about what life was like at such a pivotal time
in world history.

Poles Apart: Identity, Diversity, Tolerance
Located at a crossroads between East and West, Poland's geographical
position and unusual political setup have historically forged a
multitude of ethnic, religious and regional communities, some of which
still exist today. This crucible of conflict, where former empires have
frequently waged wars, has left a rich landscape infused with the
symbolic and physical imprints of struggles over identity, diversity and
tolerance. Study the key concepts-- prejudice, insider-outsider,
diversity, assimilation, collective memory, stereotype, symbolic
capital, empathy, tolerance and compromise--that contribute to our
understanding of what makes people 'Poles apart'.
