Alicia Svigals is the world's foremost klezmer (East European Jewish music) fiddler. Almost singlehandedly, Svigals revived this tradition that had been on the brink of extinction until the 1997 release of her debut CD Fidl. As a founding member of the Grammy-award winning band the Klezmatics, Svigals created contemporary Jewish music that combined the joyous and mystical Yiddish tradition with a postmodern aesthetic and a political worldview. She toured with the Klezmatics for 17 years, recording albums that reached the Top Ten of the Billboard and European World Music Charts. Svigals has also taught and toured with violinist Itzhak Perlman; performed in Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues at Madison Square Garden; composed for the Kronos Quartet; has been featured on NPR, A Prairie Home Companion; and performs extensively throughout North America and internationally. A composer who works in many genres, Svigals is a 2014 Fellow at the MacDowell Colony.
