Yiddish Book Center announces Translation Grant Program:

A new initiative to encourage and support Yiddish translation

 

Amherst, MA, April 2011. The Yiddish Book Center will award two grants
of $1,000 each for the translation to English of a Yiddish text, from
any genre. The Book Center has launched this new initiative in order to
encourage and support Yiddish translation.

 

According to Aaron Lansky, president and founder of the Yiddish Book
Center, "less than 2% of Yiddish titles have been translated into
English. Most of Yiddish literature is still inaccessible to English
readers. The only answer is to train and mobilize a new generation of
translators."

 

The grant offering is part of a larger translation program at the
Yiddish Book Center, including an annual translation conference (Fall of
2011), translation workshops, and new web-based translation resources. 

 

Translation Grant proposals are due by June 1, 2011. The Yiddish Book
Center will announce the recipients in August 2011. Submissions will be
judged by Justin Cammy and Catherine Madsen. Cammy is a specialist in
modern Jewish literature and Eastern European Jewish culture at Smith
College. He has translated Hinde Bergner's memoir and works by Sholem
Aleichem and Yankev Glatshteyn from Yiddish into English. Madsen is
Bibliographer at the Yiddish Book and author of the novel A Portable
Egypt and two books of non-fiction and many essays.

 

Submission Guidelines: 

* Proposals must include a Statement of Purpose describing the project
and the relevance of the translation, and 1-2 sample pages of
translation from the proposed work.

*Applicants may submit multiple proposals. A full application must be
submitted for each proposal.  

* Applicants must verify that the work is in the public domain, or must
secure permission from the copyright holder to publish the translation.

* Proposals may be a part of the applicant's academic research. 

*The translation must be completed within one year of receiving the
grant.
