Dear President Lash and Dean McCrae,

In an email sent at 3:52pm on April 11th, 2014 Orientation Leaders and
Coordinators were notified that their positions would no longer be paid.
Over the last eight weeks all candidates were told that their positions
would be paid a stipend of $300 for Orientation Leaders and $400 for
Coordinators. Applicants had an understanding about the nature of their
positions and its payment going into the application process. The
college administration violated that understanding and trust.

In light of this the Hampshire Student Union requests that you enact the
following by Monday, April 14th at Noon:

1. Extend the deadline for student orientation staff to accept their
positions to Friday, April 18th, at 4:30pm. Students need the time to
consider this sudden change in policy and its potential impact on their
financial situations. Furthermore, students deserve the opportunity to
discuss this change with their peers. The next Town Meeting occurs after
the deadline at which students have been asked to accept or deny their
employment offers.

2. Release to the student body in an all community email the policy from
which the removal of payment for Orientation Leaders and Coordinators
was derived.

3. Provide an explanation for why these changes were not communicated to
students before the application process. Students committed significant
and valuable time to the application process and should have been
notified of any conversations regarding a change in their monetary
compensation.

We are calling upon on all students to attend Town Meeting to express
their opinions on this issue. Town Meeting will be this Tuesday, April
15th, at 8:30pm in FPH West Lecture Hall.
