Message from the Dean

The fall semester is well under way, and the halls at UMass Law are 
filled with new students. We received 940 applications for the 2018 
entering class, a 20% increase over the previous year and the largest 
number in our institutional history. We grew our enrollment in a 
measured way, while simultaneously reducing our acceptance rate and 
increasing the LSAT/UGPA profile of this class.

Our 20.2% application increase far exceeded the national increase, which 
was 8.1%. In my view, the 3 most important reasons for the increase in 
interest include:

  * Bar pass: UMass Law’s 2017 first-time bar passage rate exceeded that
    for every law school in MA and RI other than Harvard, BC, BU, and
    Northeastern.
  * Employment: UMass Law’s 2017 employment rate for full-time,
    long-term, bar-required jobs exceeded that for every law school in
    MA and RI other than Harvard, BC, BU, and Northeastern.
  * Affordability: 92% of our students receive scholarships, and our
    tuition is already substantially more affordable than the other law
    schools in the region.

UMass Law first-year enrollment grows in size and quality
Our fall 2018 cohort is 17.5% larger than last year's and enters with 
higher LSAT scores and undergraduate GPAs. The students are from 12 
different countries, 25 different states, and 71 different undergraduate 
institutions.
