Hello everyone,

On Monday, November 2 @ 5 pm, the renowned scholar and activist Ruth
Gilmore will be giving a talk at Hampshire. Prof Gilmore is one of the
pioneers of prison studies in the US. She will be talking about about
police violence and killings in the US- a very timely topic. Please come
and circulate widely.

Title talk:

"Organized Abandonment and Organized Violence: Devolution and Police Power"
Ruth Wilson Gilmore, Monday November 2nd @ 5 pm, FPH Main Lecture Hall,
Hampshire College

Description:

As police killings and misconduct emblazon newspapers' front pages and
social media, and a flurry of reports and proposed reforms suggest that
outrage will converge in action for change, this lecture contextualizes
the current crisis. Is so-called community policing the solution to
police violence? This lecture explores continuities and changes in
modern police practice, by historicizing a Los Angeles case study and
theorizing the form and substance of institutional change.

Ruth Wilson Gilmore is Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences,
and Director of the Center for Place, Culture, and Politics, at the
Graduate Center, City University of New York.
