Dear Flavio,

I wanted to send you the announcement for Global Youth Connect's
January delegation to Rwanda, which is accepting applications until
Thursday, October 23. As I think you know, I was a program assistant in
Rwanda with GYC's human rights program this past summer and currently
serve on their Board of Directors.

If you could send this announcement out on any Hampshire listservs or
flag it for students you think would benefit from the program, I would
so appreciate it!

*GYC's WINTER DELEGATION TO RWANDA:
*
Dates of Delegation: December 28, 2014 – January 12, 2015

Age Range: 18-35 (Student/Professional)

Program tuition: $2,250

Application Deadline: October 23, 2014 at 5pm EST

20 years after the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the country has undergone a
remarkable transformation. Yet critical human rights questions remain.
During this GYC delegation, international participants will join with
young Rwandan human rights activists to learn about human rights
achievements and challenges in Rwanda, and to take concrete action steps
together to support current and future efforts for human rights
protection and promotion, both in Rwanda and abroad.

Through a combination of workshops, site visits, advocacy meetings, and
volunteer service with grassroots NGOs, we will learn about and act on
numerous key human rights issues in Rwanda, including (but not limited
to): gender and human rights, human rights of children, LGBTI
populations, historically marginalized indigenous groups, refugees,
domestic workers, poverty reduction, public health, juvenile justice,
freedom of expression and the arts. In advance of and during the
delegation, all participants will examine the roots of the 1994 Rwandan
genocide, and see how its legacy has impacted the country and its
people, and also how the country is attempting to rebuild today.

NOTE: Rwanda is Ebola free, and working hard to keep it that way.
Rwanda's Ministry of Health, led by Dr. Agnes Binagwaho (with whom GYC's
groups have frequently met at length), is exceedingly well organized and
working day and night to ensure the country remains Ebola free. GYC's
Executive Director can personally confirm that people coming into the
country are being treated as suspect, with no-touch thermometers taking
temperatures regardless of which country passengers are coming from.
Passengers must fill-out a questionnaire as well. Several suspected
cases were reported and pro-actively isolated over the past two months,
but all proved to be something else (malaria, etc). The last message
from the US Embassy in Rwanda concerning Ebola is here:
http://rwanda.usembassy.gov/sm_083114.html . The US Embassy (with which
GYC registers any and all participants regardless of nationality),
updates travelers to Rwanda whenever necessary. Rwanda is over 2500
miles from the West African countries which have been most heavily
impacted by Ebola.

Wishing you all the best,
Mac Hamilton
