The Human Rights Program (HRP) of the ACLU'S National office in New York
City is seeking a Legal Administrative Assistant.
OVERVIEW
The ACLU Center for Democracy works to strengthen democratic
institutions and values, including the values of government transparency
and accountability, and to reinforce the United States' commitment to
human rights and the rule of law. The Center for Democracy houses the
ACLU's Human Rights Program, which works to ensure that the U.S.
government complies with universal human rights principles in addition
to the U.S. Constitution.
The Program uses human rights strategies to complement existing ACLU
legal and legislative advocacy primarily in the areas of immigrants'
rights, national security, women's rights, prisoners' rights, criminal
law reform, and racial justice. It conducts human rights documentation
and related advocacy to combat human rights violations in the U.S., and
it engages in advocacy and litigation before U.S. courts and
international bodies, including the United Nations and regional human
rights bodies (such as the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights).
The Legal Administrative Assistant is a full-time clerical position that
provides support to the Human Rights Program team, attends regular staff
meetings and has the opportunity to learn about strategies surrounding
human rights framework.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
* Maintain professional and user-friendly office filing system.
* Schedule meetings and conference calls, and prepare relevant
material.
* Answer telephones, screen calls and take messages.
* Fax, copy, mail and complete other general administrative duties
as assigned.
* Prepare, proofread and edit legal and other documents.
* Handle travel arrangements.
* Conduct Internet and other factual research.
* Perform other clerical duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
* Bachelor's degree or 2 years related experience is preferred.
* Must have excellent organizational skills and be
detail-oriented.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel,
Outlook, etc.) and have experience with Internet research.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
* Strong research and writing skills.
* Must be able to work independently as well as within a team.
* A demonstrated interest in international human rights framework
is preferred.
* Commitment to assisting the ACLU in its mission to defend civil
liberties and human rights.
* Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.
COMPENSATION
Salary for this position is $41,586. Excellent benefits package
provided.
