The Human Rights Program (HRP) of the ACLU'S National office in
New York<br>
City is seeking a Legal Administrative Assistant.<br>

<br>
OVERVIEW<br>
The ACLU Center for Democracy works to strengthen democratic<br>
institutions and values, including the values of government
transparency<br>
and accountability, and to reinforce the United States'
commitment to<br>
human rights and the rule of law. The Center for Democracy
houses the<br>
ACLU's Human Rights Program, which works to ensure that the U.S.<br>
government complies with universal human rights principles in
addition<br>
to the U.S. Constitution.<br>
<br>
The Program uses human rights strategies to complement existing
ACLU<br>
legal and legislative advocacy primarily in the areas of
immigrants'<br>
rights, national security, women's rights, prisoners' rights,
criminal<br>
law reform, and racial justice. It conducts human rights
documentation<br>
and related advocacy to combat human rights violations in the
U.S., and<br>
it engages in advocacy and litigation before U.S. courts and<br>
international bodies, including the United Nations and regional
human<br>
rights bodies (such as the Inter-American Commission on Human
Rights).<br>

The Legal Administrative Assistant is a full-time clerical
position that<br>
provides support to the Human Rights Program team, attends
regular staff<br>
meetings and has the opportunity to learn about strategies
surrounding<br>
human rights framework.<br>

<br>
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<br>
* Maintain professional and user-friendly office filing
system.<br>
<br>
* Schedule meetings and conference calls, and prepare
relevant<br>
material.<br>
<br>
* Answer telephones, screen calls and take messages.<br>
<br>
* Fax, copy, mail and complete other general
administrative duties<br>
as assigned.<br>
<br>
* Prepare, proofread and edit legal and other documents.<br>
<br>
* Handle travel arrangements.<br>
<br>
* Conduct Internet and other factual research.<br>
<br>
* Perform other clerical duties as assigned.<br>
<br>

<br>
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS<br>
* Bachelor's degree or 2 years related experience is
preferred.<br>
* Must have excellent organizational skills and be<br>
detail-oriented.<br>
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word,
Excel,<br>
Outlook, etc.) and have experience with Internet research.<br>
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills.<br>
* Strong research and writing skills.<br>
* Must be able to work independently as well as within a
team.<br>
* A demonstrated interest in international human rights
framework<br>
is preferred.<br>
* Commitment to assisting the ACLU in its mission to
defend civil<br>
liberties and human rights.<br>
* Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.<br>

COMPENSATION<br>
Salary for this position is $41,586. Excellent benefits
package<br>
provided.<br>
