Description:
NELP seeks a quantitatively oriented policy research assistant to
conduct applied and campaign research that will support efforts to
reform and strengthen the unemployment insurance safety net program. The
major responsibility of the policy research assistant will be to
compile, analyze, and present publicly available data to support NELP’s
research and advocacy goals.
Responsibilities
-Provide the data and analysis needed to power NELP’s unemployment
insurance reform
advocacy, including estimates of workers impacted by key issues, the
cost of reform proposals and targeted analyses of key labor market
trends. Compile compelling statistics, tables, maps and graphs.
-Conduct quantitative and actuarial analyses of programmatic and
financial administrative data from unemployment insurance and related
programs. Maintain internal files of
unemployment insurance data used for NELP’s technical assistance and
advocacy.
-Respond to data requests from state partners seeking information to
support UI reform and to data requests from the media.
-With colleagues, contribute to fact sheets, web features and
publications combining empirical work and detailed analysis of
employment laws and policies. Help summarize academic research.
-Research model policies and trends by helping to conduct of surveys of
state agencies and unemployed workers.
-Maintain project contact lists and assist with outreach and advocacy
efforts as needed.
Additional Qualifications:
Requirements:
-Bachelor’s degree in economics or another applied social science.
Demonstrated coursework in statistics.
-1-2 years of relevant work experience in a research setting or
advocacy setting that utilized research skills.
-Strong experience with Microsoft Excel. Familiarity with SPSS is a
plus, as is familiarity with HTML or web content systems and photoshop.
-Commitment to economic justice.
-Strong written and oral cmmunication skills.

Start date and compensation: This position will be located in our New
York City offices and is open immediately. Salary is based on years of
experience and NELP’s collective bargaining agreement. Excellent
benefits package. This position will be initially hired with an 18 month
commitment.
