Description:
PILI is an international organization that advances human rights around
the world by stimulating public interest advocacy and developing the
institutions necessary to sustain it. PILI pursues this mission by
building capacity of civil society organizations and leaders, by
providing technical assistance on reforming legal aid systems and legal
education, and by promoting pro bono legal practice globally. It was
founded in 1997 at Columbia University and became an independent

The Program Assistant assists on all stages of PILI’s Fellowship Program
at Columbia University, from recruitment of international fellows to
placement in internships in New York. On the Legal Education Reform
Program, the Program Assistant organizes program meetings and other
events. The position reports to the Program Director and works closely
with Legal Education Reform coordinator in Budapest.

Responsibilities:

Public Interest Law Fellowship Project
• Coordinating the recruitment and selection of fellows by drafting
fellowship announcements and posting application package online;
liaising with PILI’s offices in Beijing, Budapest, and Moscow; and
managing communication with the Selection Committee;
• Prior to fellows’ arrival in New York, communicating with fellows on
course requirements and logistical arrangements; securing visas and
housing; and preparing fellows’ application packages for Columbia’s
Visiting Scholar office;
• Assisting in fellows’ orientation to New York City and Columbia Law
School;
• Organizing study visits to human rights and public interest law NGOs
in NYC and Washington, DC;
• Assisting fellows in finding internships with organizations in New
York; and
• Reporting program expenditures to Finance department and handling
other administrative duties.

Legal Education Reform Project
• Assisting in preparing workshops, conferences and other meetings or
events, including managing logistics (travel, accommodation, visas) and
preparing background materials;
• Preparing meeting minutes;
• Liaising with project partners; and
• Working with activity budgets and handling other administrative duties.


Qualifications:
• Bachelors degree
• Minimum two years relevant experience
• Highly organized and detail oriented
• Excellent communication skills and cultural sensitivity when
interacting with partners and fellows from different countries
• Demonstrated interest in legal reform, human rights, or social justice
issues
• Strong computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet
software (Microsoft Office).
