THe Human Rights Film Series continues of Wednesday Nov. 9 at 7 pm in
FPH 107 with a screening of the powerful "Long Night's Journey Into
Day: South Africa's Search for Truth and Reconciliation (2000), 94
minutes.

In South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission process,
perpetrators of the atrocities of the apartheid years (1948-1994)
were offered amnesty from criminal prosecution, but only on condition
that they speak the truth in public hearings about what they did.
Torturers and killers face survivors and their family members, all of
whom give voice to their stories of brutalization and murder, anger,
grief, and shame. Will the process of speaking truth and building a
historical narrative move the new non-racial nation toward
forgiveness and reconciliation for the abuses of the past? Or are the
perpetrators simply let off the hook in a gamble to avoid more
serious social conflict?

Sponsored by SS106T Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity, the Law
Program and the Dean of Multicultural Education.
