The Quest for Federal Acknowledgment forAmerica's Indian Tribes

"Indian" is the correct term here (not "Native American"), because 
federal law technically speaks of "federal acknowledgment as an 
American Indian tribe."  The more inclusive term "Native American" 
would include many groups, such as Native Hawaiians, who may not 
legally apply for federal acknowledgment as a tribe because they are 
not "Indian." 

"Great Father" was the term frequently used to describe the US 
President in Indian treaties.
