We hope your first few weeks of the semester have gone well so far! Now
that your schedule is (hopefully) starting to get settled, it’s a great
time to start thinking about going abroad. We’ve also got information
about a number of programs focused on sustainability in our Special
Information section, so if that’s a field you are interested in, go take
a look!

Come to this information session to learn about Hampshire’s short-term
programs being offered this January, including “The West of Ireland”,
“East African Encounters: Health, HIV, and Community Response” held in
Kenya, “Exploring Education and Childhood in Guatemala: Schooling, Arts
and Cultural Practices”. *There will be a separate information session
held for the “Tibetan Studies in India” program, see below.

Come to this information session to learn about Hampshire’s unique
Exchange program in Havana, Cuba. Faculty and staff involved with the
Hampshire in Havana, Cuba will present information on how the program

questions you may have.

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate study
abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act
of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate
students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or
four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs
worldwide.

Earth Education International offers programs which provide
high-quality, personalized learning in small groups. All programs offer
both class time and field work, including guest speakers, debates,
research, and site visits. This academic year they are offering a spring
course on sustainable global stewardship, as well as a course on deep
ecology and sustainable living available over January or during the summer.

The Institute for Sustainable International Studies will be offering a
course in Belize this January focusing on sustainable tropical ecology
and the ways in which various ethnic groups in Belize approach this
issue. While there is some class time, the course is primarily hands-on
and experiential – for example, students will spend a few days living in
villages doing trace mapping and taking their meals with local families.
The course will take place from December 26^th through January 7^th .

Earthwatch has been inspiring connections between people and the
environment for over 40 years and has pioneered the engagement of the
public in peer reviewed scientific research worldwide. College students
typically join Earthwatch expeditions during their winter and summer
breaks- and tell Earthwatch that this hands-on experience is not only
fun and educational, but a key resume builder and differentiator during
today's challenging economic times. You can learn more at

*>>Scholarships to Study Studio Arts in Florence<<*
Located in historic Florence, Italy, Studio Arts Centers International
(SACI) offers studio classes in a wide variety of art forms, as well as
art history courses, guest lectures, multi-day trips, and more.
SACI also offers a number of scholarships for students applying to their
programs, including the 15,000 dollar per year Elizabeth A. Sackler
scholarship, which is awarded to a woman who would not otherwise be able
to attend SACI, and the SACI Consortium Scholarship, which is a full
tuition award offered twice per year.
Admission is made on a rolling basis, so students are encouraged to
apply early, especially if applying for scholarships.

NAFSA is creating various panels to help study abroad alumni in the area
become aware of how they can best utilize their study abroad experience
in their future.
Topics of interest will include:

* Working abroad (long/short term)
* Marketing your study abroad experience
* Grad school options
* International jobs in the US/Boston area

interest, GEO may arrange transportation to and from the conference.
*>>2012 Dharma Tour to Thailand<<*
This tour, run by the Five Colleges, will take students across Thailand
from January 4^th to the 20^th in order to experience first-hand the
role of Buddhist customs, doctrine, and practice in a predominantly
Buddhist culture. It includes food, entertainment, four days as guests
at a monastery, two days caring for rescued elephants at a nature park,
ancient ruins, beaches, and more. Participation will be limited to 30
people so act fast!

There will also be information sessions around the 5 colleges; keep an

Matthew Shamey
**
GEO welcomes a new Assistant Director of Global Education, Matthew
Shamey. Matthew is coming to us from SIT where he advised for the SIT
Study Abroad South America programs. Matthew has traveled extensively
through South America and speaks Spanish. Here at GEO, he will primarily
manage the ICADS, MSN, University of Puerto Rico, ISEP, and CIEL
Hampshire Exchange Programs. Please join us in welcoming Matthew to the
Hampshire community.
