*>> Study in The Gambia with the SMCM PEACE program<<*

Study abroad in The Gambia, West Africa's "Smiling Coast," with the SMCM
PEACE program, January 13 - May 21, 2012. Students will be able to study
in one of Africa's newest public universities, The University of The
Gambia (UTG), through the St. Mary's College of Maryland's PEACE program
(Promoting Educational and Cultural Exchange), this coming spring
semester. In addition to registering for courses taught by African
faculty members at the UTG, students are able to identify an area of
personal, academic or professional interest in order to develop a
service-learning/directed research project that has you working
alongside Gambian professionals in schools, hospitals, agricultural
research institutes, or non-governmental organizations. Each student
studies either the Mandinka or Wolof languages and then uses that
language in community outreach activities with local Gambian families.
Students learn about rich Gambian cultural traditions in music, dance
and art over the course of the semester by studying djembe drumming,
learning to cook Gambian foods, and working with Gambian artists. On
weekends students travel to Gambian villages, participate in events
organized by the University of The Gambia's student Union, or visit US
Peace Corps volunteers in their home villages. And of course, there's
time for enjoying the superb Gambian beaches, just miles from the
students' residential compound affectionately known as "Happy Camp."
