UPCOMING EVENTS
*****FILM SCREENING /INFO SESSION: “Closely Watched Trains” *****
We invite you to a screening of the classic Czech film, "Closely Watched
Trains" (1966) with an opportunity to learn more about Hampshire's
short-term field course, Prague and Krakow: City, History, Text.
Wednesday, 23 February -7:30 p.m.
FPH - Faculty Lounge (second floor)
The film is based on the literary work of the same title by Bohumil
Hrabal. At a village railway station in occupied Czechoslovakia, a
bumbling dispatcher's apprentice longs to liberate himself from his
virginity. Oblivious to the war and the resistance that surrounds him,
this young man embarks on a journey of sexual awakening and
self-discovery, encountering a universe of frustration, eroticism, and
adventure within his sleepy backwater depot. Wry and tender, Academy
Award'-winning Closely Watched Trains is a masterpiece of human
observation and one of the best-loved films of the Czech New Wave.
Our Prague program is an exciting one that examines history, culture,
politics, and urban space from a variety of interdisciplinary
perspectives. Here is the course of study from 2009:

Thursday, February 24th, 7pm, FPH (Main Lecture Hall)
PROTECTION: Men and condoms in the time of HIV and AIDS (110mins) A
creative documentary filmed in South Africa, Kenya and Sierra Leone to
stir and support discussion among men and boys about sexual well-being
and safety.
PROTECTION brings to live tensions, contradictions and realities
surrounding condom use around men and boys in these times of HIV. The
film (and its 'extras' and website) offers glimpses into attitudes and
emotions of men of different backgrounds and ages in South Africa, Kenya
and Sierra Leone, in rural and urban contexts, and the challenges and
realities of sexual protection that men face in different places. The
film (with versions in 7 languages - including Chichewa, Zulu, Swahili
and Hausa) has been made as a resource for use in HIV awareness /
prevention work in a range of contexts in sub Saharan African countries.

Jill Lewis, executive producer and project coordinator for the film, has
worked in gender-focused HIV prevention building since 1986 - since 2001
in a range of African contexts. She will introduce the film briefly, the
challenges of the initiative and be available for discussion after.
***** Chiku Awali African Dance, Arts, and Culture ******
Performing Drumming, dance and poetry on Saturday, February 26th! Main
Dance Studio at 7:30 pm.
Chiku Awali African Dance, Arts, and Culture, is a non-profit
organization based in Rockland County New York, whose goal is to bring
African dance and drumming to under-served and under-privileged
communities in the area. Ghanaian master drummer and choreographer Jerry
Kwashie Dzokoto, and director Alexandreena Dixon (Nana Yaa Oforiwaa
Amanfo I, Queenmother of Bepoase, Ghana) have been working particularly
with youth of African descent to foster knowledge and pride in their
African heritage.
At Hampshire, they will perform a dance drama called Rudo and Jumoke,
which uses traditional and creative African drumming and dance as well
as poetry to re-tell and re-shape Shakespeare's classic story of
forbidden love and family feud to discuss issues such as racism,
inter-racial marriage, and globalization in an African context and from
an African and African-American perspective.
