/3. Creating Ties Service Learning – Alternative Energy in Peru /
Wind Power for the People by the People Service Learning College Program
Alternative Energy for Peruvian communities in need
/4 Weeks/
In this four week service learning program, college students will work
with a non-governmental organization on the northern coast of Peru
building wind turbines from recycled materials. These turbines will be
donated and installed in communities in need. The aim of the program is
to use wind energy to provide free electricity to indigenous communities
that have no access to it.
We are recommending that this program be offered as an internship or
"for credit" summer program and/or and independent study for students
majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering,
Sustainable, Architecture, Sustainable Resources, Sustainable Business,
Environmental Studies, Sustainable Development, Geography, Anthropology,
International Development, Community Development, Sociology and other
related majors.
This project gives students the opportunity to learn about alternative
wind energy, have a “hands on” experience building a renewable source of
energy. It also gives them the opportunity to become instruments for
permanent change in communities across Peru.
/4. Vietnam Westfield State Summer Course/
Travel to the ancient land that has shaped much of contemporary U.S.
foreign policy and affected the lives of generations in both the U.S.
and Vietnam. In this 3-credit course, we will not only learn about the
culture, history, politics, and people of Vietnam, but we will also
examine the mass media of the country and their impact. We will look at
U.S. media representation of Vietnam as well.
Taught and led by Westfield State University Professor Tom Gardner, the
two-week trip will include meetings with Vietnamese college students and
professors. We will also see important cultural and historic sites in
Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City, commonly known as Saigon.
Total Cost (estimated: including air fare, lodging, meals, guide) -
$4,585 (plus registration for course credit through DGCE at Westfield
State). Credits are transferrable. Non-credit participants are also welcome.
