[GEO] January Term Opportunities Abroad!

Hey folks, this week the GEO Digest will be highlighting January Term 
study abroad programs! Deadline are fast approaching, so, if any of 
these programs interest you, come into the office for more information.

*Deadlines and Events!!!*

Oct. 16th: Spring '10 Hampshire Exchange Program & Jan-Term field course 
applications are due (GEO)

Nov. 13th: Spring '10 Enrollment Notification Deadline (CASA)

***Hampshire's January Term Field Courses***

The Hague: International Human Rights Tribunals with professor Flavio 
Risech
Dates: Jan. 5-16
Observe actual court proceedings in various international criminal 
tribunals in such places as the International Criminal Tribunal, the 
International Court of Justice, and the UN's high court for resolution 
of disputes between states. Students will be completing a research paper 
based on viewing these proceedings as well as visits to courts of 
historical significance like the Special Court for Sierra Leone. 
Flavio's Human Rights course is NOT a prerequisite, but, students with a 
background in human rights will be given precedent.

The West of Ireland: Land and Landscape with professor Mark Feinstein
Dates: Jan. 5-17
West Ireland has a rich natural history that is intertwined with the 
history of the people who have lived there. Explore the beautiful 
landscape while studying its historical and current uses and possible 
future.

Tibetan Studies in India with Smith professor Jay Garfield
Dates: Dec. 27-Jan. 23
Experience daily lectures in Buddhist philosophy, Tibetan medicine, art, 
history, and culture. Visit various cultural sites that figure 
significantly in the history of Buddhism. The program will also visit 
Hindu temples, Indian museums and participate in other cultural 
opportunities.

Many students opt to do internships, language learning, study programs, 
or other learning activities abroad during January Term or during the 
summer. How these outside learning experiences might be incorporated 
into a student's Division II or Division III portfolio may be negotiated

CETLALIC: Progressive Spanish Language School
*Dates: Jan. 9-22
Cetlalic offers two different January-Term social movements courses: 
W*omen and Social Change in Mexico* and the *Winter LGBT Program*. 
Cetlalic is based out of Cuernavaca, Mexico where students will stay 
with a family in the community and take classes including daily 
intensive Spanish in classes with a maximum of 4 other students.

Living Routes: Study Abroad for a Sustainable Future*
Dates: varying
Living Routes offers three January-Term programs: in *Hueheucoyotl, 
Mexico* learn about leadership for social change! Become a consensus 
facilitator and practice bringing people together for positive social 
change. In *Yoff, Senegal* participate in sustainable community 
development! Experience rural and urban Senegal through service learning 
projects and living with a Senegalese family. Study the fair trade 
movement in *Peru*! Work with Oro Verde, a Coffee Cooperative promoting 
agricultural biodiversity, and environmental and social justice. 
Participation in a Living Routes program gives you credits through UMass 
Amherst!

*International Education for Students*
Dates: varying
IES offers three Jan-Term programs: Come to *Riobamba, Ecuador* to study Politics and Ethnicity in the Andes. Classes are held on the USFQ Riobamba campus, students stay with homestay families, and get to participate in three field trips around Ecuador.In *Rome, Italy* students take the class "From Pontius Pilate to Theodosius: The Advent of Christianity. Students share apartments throughout the city of Rome and travel heavily throughout the city to incorporate field studies in such places as The Vatican, the Arch of Constantine, St. Peter's Tomb, and more! Study history in *Granada, Spain*! Students will look at Spain and Morocco as historic, artistic and religious crossroads. Homestays are provided in Spain and in Morocco, and courses are taught at the IES Abroad Center on the Plaza Santa Ana in Granada.

*World Endeavors*
Dates: Up to You!
World Endeavors offers various internship and volunteer opportunities in January. The internship program lasts a minimum of 1 month. After choosing a place and internship field, World Endeavors sets you up witha  company or organization and gives you support in finding housing. Volunteering opportunities are offered around the world as well, the specifics of each one varies significantly. People can volunteer ona week-week basis.
