Five College Assistant Professor of Sustainable Architecture Candidate Presentation
M. Naomi Darling

Monday March 12th, 2012 5:30 p.m., Franklin Patterson East Lecture Hall, HAMPSHIRE COLLEGE

M. Naomi Darling has an M.Arch from Yale University, an MFA from Monash
University (Melbourne, Australia) and a BSE in Civil Engineering from
Princeton University; she has also studied at the Sea Education
Association (Woods Hole, MA). Her “Kernan Tea House”, completed in 2007,
was recently showcased by the American Institute of Architects Center
for Emerging Professionals. As an undergraduate, she worked as part of
an interdisciplinary study researching climate change in the Antarctic
and had the opportunity to observe first hand icebergs that had broken
off of the continental ice sheet and an area of open water in the solid
winter ice pack. This led to her thesis that linked climatic factors to
design by developing a computational fluid dynamic model to simulate
snow drifting at the South Pole to aid in the development of a geometric
form for a new research station. She teaches in the Urban Studies
Department at Brown University and in the School of Architecture at
Yale, including courses in Environmental Design. Ms. Darling was
responsible for producing the “Sustainability Handbook” for Yaleʼs China
Studio, and has worked on projects involving sustainability around the
globe.
