Hello All,

Here are some upcoming events sponsored by the library:

IS CINEMA DEAD? LECTURE & PANEL WITH PAOLO CHERCHI USAI

Tuesday 10/30/2012
4:30 pm - 6:00 pm
This is a Five College Mellon Digital Humanities event, sponsored by
the Hampshire College Library

Paolo Cherchi Usai is a pioneer in film preservation who has devoted
his professional life to ensuring the survival of great works of art
on film art. An early champion of film preservation before there was
much public awareness of film's fragility or organized commitment to
its preservation, Cherchi Usai has worked tirelessly to ensure that
many of the greatest works of film survive, in the belief that these
artistic and historical documents must be seen to be part of our
visual and cultural memory. He has shown historical foresight in his
passion for silent films and their place in the emerging construction
of a film canon.

Senior Curator of the Motion Picture Department of George Eastman
House and the author of THE DEATH OF CINEMA, Cherchi Usai will speak
at Hampshire on issues of film preservation and then join a panel
discussion with students and faculty from the 5 Colleges.

Location: Brand Screening Room, Liebling Center

"Non-Visible and Intangible: Artists Books Respond to E-Books" is a
series of events and a gallery exhibition on the topic of Artists
Books in the Digital Age held at the Harold F. Johnson Library at
Hampshire College in November 2012.

The events explore how technology has affected all aspects of artists
books ? from production to creation to access and use. Some of the
works on display in the exhibit "Pulp to Pixels: Artists Books in the
Digital Age" explore interactive generative art with text and image,
some function as books in their own right but can be enhanced with
technology, and others require a smartphone or tablet to view them at
all.

This project was made possible in part by a Mellon Digital Humanities
Grant from Five Colleges, Inc., and co-sponsored by the Hampshire
College Board of Trustees.

Please see http://nonvisible.wordpress.com/ for all details and a
schedule of events.
