On Earth Day weekend, Sunday April 24th, 2005, Sam Merrett, and another
representative from Biodiesel Oberlin located in Oberlin, Ohio, will be
conducting a presentation concerning the use of vegetable oil based fuels
in diesel engines. They will discuss the process of making one's own
alternative fuel called biodiesel. Biodiesel can be made from waste cooking
oil and used in any unmodified diesel engine. This fuel is not only less
polluting than conventional diesel, but it can also be produced from a
renewable domestic waste product. This talk will highlight the
accomplishments of Biodiesel Oberlin, a community based group working with
an EPA grant to develop and test a mobile, off-the-grid, community-scale
biodiesel processor.
The topic of the lecture will provide the participants in Earth Day
events with a very tangible tool for taking their energy needs into their
own hands. The creation of this alternative fuel serves as a positive
practice of pragmatic and hands on environmentalism, and offers not only
an alternative to supporting the oil industry, but an alternative way of
going about environmental activism.
