Celebration of Diversity? Gay Shame? Homonormativity? Assimilationist Politics?
TUESDAY APRIL 19th @ 7PM
FOOD FOR THOUGHT BOOKS:
106 North Pleasant Street
Amherst, MA 01002
On Tuesday April 19th Queer folks, radicals, LGBTQIA, and Allies are being asked
to meet at Food for Thought Books at 6pm to discuss organizing a non violent
direct action over Pride Weekend (May 7).
This action will be unanimously decided upon by the participants of the meeting
and will address issues around a multitude of systemic oppressions that are
being perpetuated by the organizational tactics of NOHO Pride.
- This list begins with a class critique of the cost of participation in the
weekends entertainment, the inherent racism evident in a complete lack of
inclusion of people of colors voices, participation and leadership, the
tokenization of trans and disabled folks, the assimilationist politics of
co-opting the nuclear family model for family day thereby marginalizing queer
conceptions of family models and the lesbian and gay buy in into corrupt
capitalist structures by accepting sponsorship from mega corporations such as
Coca Cola, Subaru and many more. see the noho pride website
http://www.site.nohopride.org/ for more information
We will work together to go over some of these ideas and come up with a set of
goals for this upcoming action. Some possibilities of intention are:
1. Take the Movement back into our own hands (what does this mean to you?)
2. Raise consciousness around these issues to educate mainstream LGBTs about
issues that desperately need attention
3. Align ourselves with larger social justice movements
4. Let white mainstream gays and lesbians know that racism and exclusion will
not be accepted
5. Educate towards hopefulness
