Hello,

Iveta Jusova, the Antioch College professor who leads the Women's and
Gender Studies in Europe semester abroad, has asked past participants to do
some outreach for the program. I went on the fall 2008 trip, and it was
really fabulous! If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them.

Best,
Caroline

==================================

*Antioch's Women’s and Gender Studies in Europe* program is now accepting
applications for Fall 2010 (March 30 deadline). If you are interested in
women’s, gender, or sexuality issues, or in feminist/queer theory, you
should take advantage of this opportunity and apply as soon as
possible. Successful
participants earn 16 credit hours in Women’s and Gender Studies.

The WGSE program participants study comparative feminist theory (AWS 350),
feminist methodology (AWS 250), and European situated feminisms (AWS 240)
while traveling to Utrecht & Amsterdam, Berlin, Krakow, Prague, and
Istanbul. As well, each student develops and conducts a self-designed
independent research project (AWS 396) on a topic of her/his interest (such
as reproductive rights, LGBTQ issues, trafficking, sex-work, queer youth
support organizations, immigration issues, feminist art, etc.).

Participating in the program also gives students an opportunity to hear
lectures and take seminars with a variety of feminist and queer scholars and
activists, such as Rosi Braidotti (feminist philosopher of the embodiment
and sexual difference), Gloria Wekker (leading theorist of
intersectionality), Vera Chytilova (Czech film director, author of Daisies),
Julia Ehrt (European Trans-gender Council), Rebecca Gomperts (founder of
Women on Waves), Laura Merritt (sex-worker activist) and many others.

Furthermore, this is an excellent opportunity to establish contacts with
WGS students from all over Europe - particularly during the first two-week
part of the WGSE program, which converges with NOISE summer school in WGS!
This year, NOISE will take place in Granada, Spain, adding yet another very
attractive site to our schedule.

Please visit our website at http://aea.antioch.edu/ws/ and publicize the
program among interested students!

Contact Iveta Jusova, Director of the program, with questions.

 2010 WGSE program outline:

The tentative dates for the 2010 WGSE program are August 13-November 17. The
dates will be finalized by early April.

The 2010 WGSE program will begin in Granada (Spain), the 2010 site of the
NOISE Summer school in WGS. During the two-week NOISE summer school,
participants will be attending lectures by leading European WGS scholars and
participating in tutor-led discussions with WGS Masters students from all
over Europe. NOISE is a wonderful opportunity to meet some of the most
influential European feminist and queer scholars and to network with young
feminists from countries across Europe.

As the group then travels to Krakow, Prague, Berlin, Utrecht, and Istanbul,
students will be taking classes (either on campuses or at independent local
women’s/LGBTQ centers) taught by the Program Director (Iveta) and other
scholars, and attending lectures by local feminist and queer academics and
various NGOs.

>From Granada our group of 12-14 students will fly to Krakow, Poland. Krakow
was the capital city of Poland from XII to XV century, and we will be
staying in private apartments and taking classes directly at the city’s
beautiful historical center. While in Krakow, the group will be hosted by
Efka, a local women’s center. We will travel to Warsaw, and the group will
also visit the WWII concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, which is a short
distance (by bus) from Krakow.

>From Krakow, the group will travel by train to Prague, the capital of the
Czech Republic. During our two-week stay in Prague, students will stay with
local families, and the group will be hosted by the Gender Center. Students
will have access to the Center’s WS library, the largest WS library in
Central/Eastern Europe.

Next, we will be off to Berlin, the dynamic capital of Germany, an artistic
and cultural center. Berlin is usually the WGSE participants’ favorite site
as the most queer-friendly city in Europe. Students will be in homestays,
and the group will be hosted by the Gender Center at Humboldt University, as
well as by GLADT (queer youth NGO).

>From Berlin we will travel to Utrecht in the Netherlands, a university town
bustling with students and bicycles, and full of cafes and canals. The
Gender Studies Department at the University of Utrecht, with which the WGSE
program has been fortunate to have a productive and close relationship, is a
leading WS department in Europe and the coordinator of NOISE. The group
will be staying at Strowis, a safe, clean, and friendly hostel (my favorite
accommodation on the trip!), and students will have access to the UU’s
libraries and computer labs. During our stay in Holland we will also make
group excursions to Amsterdam, including one to the Prostitution Information
Center and the red light district.

Our stay in Utrecht will be interrupted by a ten-day trip to Istanbul,
Turkey, a new site we added two years ago. Besides taking lectures we will
do lots of sightseeing in this incredibly beautiful city. We will all go to
the Chora Church, the Byzantine Tekfur Palace, the Greek Patriarchate, the
Sultanahmet, Topkapi Palace (including the Harem). As well the group will
take a ferry together either to one of the Prince's Islands or along the
Bosphorus to the Black Sea. Optional (but very popular) is a trip to one of
Istanbul’s Turkish baths.

The last week of the WGSE program (back in Utrecht) will be left for
students’ final presentations of their independent research projects. Each
student will be working on his/her research throughout the program,
consulting with the Director regularly.
