Welcome to Week Two of our SRLP Sustainability Fundraising Campaign
<http://www.srlp.org/sustain> . We've already received a number of donations
and new monthly pledges. Thank you! Spread the word to help us meet our
goal!
This week, we're highlighting the work of the Direct
<http://srlp.org/services/legal> Services Team (DST) and some exciting
related information on the updated website!
DST provides free, respectful, affirming legal services to transgender,
intersex and gender nonconforming low-income people and people of color.
Since our founding in 2002, SRLP has provided direct legal services to over
800 clients. We offer legal services in English, Spanish, and Hindi through
drop-in hours <http://www.srlp.org/services/legal/dropin> and by
appointment.
DST also works on precedent-setting lawsuits to strengthen the rights of all
people against discrimination on the basis of gender identity, gender
expression, or intersex condition.
Some of the work we do:
* Prisoners' rights <http://srlp.org/areas/criminal_justice>
* Fighting discrimination in sex-segregated facilities
<http://srlp.org/areas/gender_segregated> , such as group homes, homeless
shelters, public restrooms, and drug treatment centers
* Name changes and gender changes on ID <http://www.srlp.org/node/89>
* Advocating for Medicaid coverage
<http://www.srlp.org/files/SRLPmedicaidarticle.pdf>
* Immigration issues <http://www.srlp.org/areas/immigration> , such as
adjustments of status and naturalization.
Groundbreaking Litigation Victories:
* Our 2002 victory in Jean Doe v. Bell <http://srlp.org/node/75>
established that discrimination against transgender youth in the New York
foster care system is illegal and that transgender youth in foster care have
the right to dress in clothing appropriate to their gender identity.
* In 2003, our victory in Matter of Guido
<http://www.srlp.org/node/97> established that transgender name change
applicants cannot be held to a higher evidentiary standard than
non-transgender applicants. The Guido decision made the front page of the
New York Law Journal and culminated in SRLP providing transgender awareness
training to New York Civil Court Judges.
* Another major victory in 2003, Morrill v. Morrill, reversed a family
court order that denied our client the right to visit her children while
being open about her gender identity.
* In 2006, in the case of Rodriguez v. Johnson
<http://srlp.org/node/197> , in collaboration with Lambda Legal Defense and
Education Fund and Debevoise & Plimpton, we won a settlement in our impact
litigation case challenging discrimination and medical neglect of
transgender youth in the juvenile justice system. This case was on behalf of
a young, low income, transgender woman of color who was cut off hormones,
placed with boys, and sanctioned for expressions of femininity.
If you're inspired by SRLP's work, we hope you'll join us as a monthly donor
<http://www.srlp.org/sustain> and help us reach our goal of raising
$750/month from these fundraising emails!
