Man for a Day Workshop
at Hope Martin Studio, 39 West 14th Street Room 508, New York, NY 10011 (bet 5th
and 6th Aves)
Sat March 31, 2007
12noon-12 midnight
Fee: $200
Here is a brief workshop description:
the workshop day -
each person has to bring the clothes they need for the workshop (including
shoes, underwear, shirt, pants, and so on)
I will supply bandages to bind breasts and "penis making material" - basically
condoms and cotton wool. People are free to create their own with other
materials if they want.......!
Each person gets an individual make-over with beard hair, 5 o' clock shadow,
hair gel, etc.
That usually takes about 30 mins.
When the make-over is finished, participants have to spend time looking at
themselves in a mirror and figure out what kind of a man they are - inventing a
name, a history, passions, tastes, etc. - everything that goes into the making
of an alter-ego.
When everyone is ready, we sit in a circle and introduce ourselves, first as
women and why we want to take the workshop, and then as our male characters.
The training part of the workshop involves learning to sit, walk, talk, gesture
and interact as men. Sometimes I send people out on field trips so they can
observe men and watch their behavior, particularly if it's a large workshop and
make-up sessions take quite some time.
Then they return to the workshop with gestures they've picked up from their
observations, and demonstrate them for the group.
Participants partner up and have dialogs in their characters. I then give a
series of scene studies and everyone gets a chance to perform for the group and
to receive feedback.
When everyone feels confident, we go out to a public place, and test out our new
identities - in past workshops in New York we've gone to topless bars (yes, I
know they don't exist anymore), like Billy's on 6th Ave/24th and Baby Doll
Lounge on White St. We've also gone on the Circle Line, which created quite a
hoo-ha with the tourists, and to gay clubs, the clit club, Chinese restaurants,
pool halls, and so on. It really depends on the group where they want to go.
Sometimes people go in couples to some place, and others want to stay in a
group.
Later, we come back to the studio and have a feedback session.
This is usually a weekend workshop but in New York, I always do it in one day
because of time, and cost of studio rental, etc.
You can find a longer description of the workshop on my website:

Let me know if you are interested in participating as I have a limited
enrollment.
Best,
Diane Torr
