</SPAN>Voz Latina is a bilingual, community magazine. Considering that the
mainstream media does not represent the Latino community, the magazine aims to
acquire an in-depth coverage of Latino issues and to increase the representation
of Latinos in media outlets. As an alternative magazine, Voz Latina also aims to
promote a political awareness about Latinos in the Unites States, and about the
history and socio-economic development of <st1:place>Latin America</st1:place>.
(But we also have an arts section, ect.). It'll be distributed in the Five
Collges (later Williams College is joining the magazine as well), Springfield,
Holyoke, Greenfield, Amherst, Northampton (basically throughout all of Western
Mass). </FONT></FONT></P>

</SPAN>I’m looking to get a list of those interested in participating in the
first edition of the magazine (reporting and writing, photojournalism,
layout/graphics and marketing/advertising). The first edition is scheduled to be
distributed in early December. Given the time constraints for this first
edition, I’m looking specifically for several writers. Those who are interested
would get assigned to a professional journalist and would get coached on doing
the article, interviewing techniques, ect. For some articles, the journalist
would write it and you would contribute. For others, you and other students
would write it with the help and support of the journalist. The purpose is for
writers to get acquainted with the process of reporting- think of it as a
training program that would prepare you to participate in the second edition.

</SPAN>Secondly, there will be a journalism workshop on November 15th
with reporters from The Hartford Courant talking about different aspects of
journalism for Latinos. Everyone is invited but it’s first-come, first-basis.
Since the journalists would we working with you one-on-one, only a small group
from each college can attend.<SPAN style="mso-spacerun: yes">

</SPAN>Thirdly, besides the publication of the magazine, there will be an annual
conference for professional journalists from all over to talk to us, a tour of
CNN (to get the inside scoop on broadcast journalism). Throughout the year there
will also be many (mini) journalism workshops. So if you want to participate in
any way, let me know! This is a great chance to get published.

</SPAN>And, just a reminder, most journalists do not study journalism. It is
actually preferred that you pick it up (like by working with Voz Latina!) and
major in political science, history, science, english, languages, ect. So don’t
feel like you can’t participate because you’re not studying journalism or have
never done it before! </FONT></FONT></P></DIV>
