UMass-Amherst<BR>Free and Open to the Public<BR><BR>A Chicana activist, author,
and educator, <st1:City><st1:place>Elizabeth</st1:place></st1:City> "Betita"
<st1:City><st1:place>Martinez</st1:place></st1:City> has<BR>published six books
and many articles on social justice movements in
the<BR><st1:country-region><st1:place>Americas</st1:place></st1:country-region>.
Best known is her bilingual volume, *500 Years of Chicano<BR>History in
Pictures*. Her latest book is *De Colores Means All of Us:
<st1:City><st1:place>Latina</st1:place></st1:City> Views<BR>for a Multi-Colored
Century*. During the 1960s,
<st1:City><st1:place>Martinez</st1:place></st1:City> served fulltime in
the<BR>Black Civil Rights Movement with the Student Nonviolent
Coordinating<BR>Committee (SNCC) in the South and as the
<st1:State><st1:place>New York</st1:place></st1:State> office coordinator.
In 1968, she<BR>joined the Chicano movement in <st1:State><st1:place>New
Mexico</st1:place></st1:State>, where she edited the movement<BR>newspaper, *El
Grito del Norte* and co-founded the
<st1:place><st1:PlaceName>Chicano</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceName>Communications</st1:PlaceName><BR><st1:PlaceType>Center</st1:PlaceType></st1:place>,
a barrio-based organization. Since moving to the <st1:City><st1:place>San
Francisco</st1:place></st1:City><BR>Bay Area in 1976, she has organized on
Latino/a community issues, taught<BR>Ethnic Studies and Women's Studies in the
<st1:place><st1:PlaceName>California</st1:PlaceName>
<st1:PlaceType>State</st1:PlaceType>
<st1:PlaceType>University</st1:PlaceType></st1:place> system, and<BR>conducted
anti-racist training workshops. She ran for Governor
of<BR><st1:State><st1:place>California</st1:place></st1:State> on the Peace and
Freedom Party ticket in 1982. In 1997, she co-founded<BR>and currently
directs the Institute for MultiRacial Justice in <st1:City><st1:place>San
Francisco</st1:place></st1:City>.<BR>She is also an editor of the national
bilingual newspaper, *War Times*.<BR><BR>This event was organized by Solidarity
