Hi Raices Familia,

First of all, for those of you who have only recently been added to
the Raices list server, BIENVENIDOS!! To the rest of you, What's up? :D

I hope everyone had an excellent and productive weekend.

As some of you know and some don't, Raices is an organization for
students of Hampshire College who are interested in Latin@ culture and
heritage. Raíces strives to promote the identity and unity of
Hampshire College's Latino/a students through intellectual, cultural,
academic, and social growth and to increase their visibility and
involvement in campus and community activities.

Just wanted to let you know of some pretty cool events going on campus
this week that you want to check out.

B'AKTUN 13: Performance at Hampshire
Wednesday, October 17, 2012
3:30-5 p.m.: UNIDAD workshop
5-6:30 p.m.: Dinner for workshop participants w/cast
8 p.m.: B'ATUN 13 Performance on the Mainstage in Emily Dickinson Hall (EDH)

It's a bilingual performance by Teatro Milagro about the end of the
Mayan calendar, that explores Mayan mythology, immigration rights, and
the environment. Teatro Milagro is the international touring theatre
company of the Miracle Theatre Group , who craft current global issues
into cutting edge dramatic plays infused with Latino culture, Spanish
language, and original music.

Workshop description
In conjunction with B'aktun 13, UNIDAD is a theatre workshop that
explores "Ser, Communidad y Futuro" ("Ourselves, Our Community and Our
Future") through ecodrama and image theatre. UNIDAD workshops use a
combination of popular education and role-playing techniques to engage
participants as "actors" in a dialogue that provokes self-reflection.
Students will participate in eco-drama scene creation and other
creative writing exercises as they celebrate "individuality".

"Color of Compassion"
Thursday, October 18th, 2012
5:30-9:30pm Screening and Dinner
Cultural Center

Colors of Compassion is a documentary film that follows the historic
first retreat for People of Color to be led by Zen Buddhist Master
Thich Nhat Hanh. Filmmaker Eloise De Leon is a Chicana and Navajo
media artist, writer and healing practitioner. She earned her M.A. in
Education (SDSU); M.F.A. in Visual Arts (UCSD); and served a two-year
artist fellowship from UC MEXUS (UCR). She has taught video production
to college students as well as to teens in a residential foster care
high school.

Like I said before, the more support we show with events like these,
the more our presence on campus is known and the stronger we grow as a
familia. I know you have been working mad hard and need a break from
your work so what better way than checking out these amazing events.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
