[RAICES] Reminder - Diversity Workshop

Join us on Friday, March 28,
from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Red Barn
for the last faculty workshop of this academic year:
"Diversity in the Classroom".

Multicultural education happens on a number of levels within the classroom
(climate/environment, content and pedagogy) as well as beyond the 
classroom (living spaces, organizations, etc). To work towards 
creating and sustaining a more inclusive classroom environment, the 
Dean of Faculty Office has been offering faculty development 
workshops.  These workshops focus on furthering the awareness, 
knowledge, and skills of faculty to better enable them to incorporate 
and address issues of diversity in the classroom; and to better serve 
students.

The first workshop revolved around the multiple identities and group 
affiliations the faculty brings to the classroom.  The second focused 
on individual case studies.  For this final workshop, we would like 
to facilitate a conversation with students and faculty on the topic 
of diversity in the classroom.

  Based on input from students, faculty and staff, the conversation's focus is:
® Positive or successful teaching moments/ classes

The first part of the workshop will concentrate on what do 
students/faculty feel good about what they are doing in their 
classrooms.  What is an affirming experience?  In thinking about 
positive moments, we will need to discuss what didn't work so well 
and what are some challenges.

® What next?
"During lunch, we will brainstorm together on what to do next year to 
continue building a more inclusive classroom environment.

In preparation for the workshop, two highly recommended readings are 
the second chapter from Other People's Children by Lisa Delpit and 
the last chapter from Political Moments in the Classroom by Margaret 
Himley et al.  

Light lunch will be served.  To obtain the readings and to have an
