"E. 96th St." tells the story of the borderline between East Harlem
and the Upper East Side of New York City,
two neighborhoods that grew up side-by-side
on opposite ends of the U.S. socioeconomic spectrum.
The videographer takes us on a tour up Park Avenue,
following a train line that runs underneath
the flowers, luxury buildings and doormen of the Upper East Side
until it rises out of the ground at 96th St. to clatter above
the bodegas and projects of East Harlem on an elevated track.
Through personal interviews with folks living both above and below the
division,
the videographer raises important questions about gentrification, urban
renewal,
racism, and the powerful influence of wealth in the U.S.
Weaving together the voices of residents, politicians and graffiti writers,
as well as the videographer's own experiences living on the Upper East Side,
"E. 96th St." tells a powerful story about how
the borders of race, class, and public transportation
have burrowed into our urban collective unconscious.
