Intermittent water supply (IWS) is common in low- and middle-income countries and impacts 1 billion people globally. Drinking water in IWS is often microbial contaminated for several reasons including loss of disinfectant residual and groundwater intrusion due to loss of pressure. There is very little literature on the complex ways microbial contamination impacts IWS, which has become a barrier in creating potential solutions to maintain water quality in IWS. To begin to close the gaps in our knowledge of IWS, we have created a lab-scale recirculating 'pipeloop' in duplicate. The pipeloops are being used to conduct controlled experiments related to IWS water quality and could help us evaluate potential interventions to minimize microbial contamination in IWS. The pipeloops are very cool, I am told.
<p class="" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 1.5rem 0px; color: rgb(42, 39, 39); font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2;">Biography: Mimi graduated from Hampshire College in 2015 with a concentration in Environmental & Water Resource Engineering. While at Hampshire, Mimi was involved in designing and implementing two community drinking water projects in rural Kenya as a member of Engineering Without Borders. After Hampshire, Mimi facilitated community health projects in Guinea, West Africa, as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Today, Mimi is a graduate student at the University of Massachusetts Amherst whose research focuses on intermittent piped drinking water supply in low- and middle-income countries.
<p class="" style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 1.5rem 0px; color: rgb(42, 39, 39); font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-variant-ligatures: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2;">Fantastic Friday is a weekly seminar where either faculty, student(s), a class, or a visiting lecturer gives a presentation/talk about their research or other academic project.
