Solving our local communities’ environmental problems or contributing to
the solutions of the world’s biggest environmental problems require an
interdisciplinary approach bringing together environmental science and
management, economics, policy making, environmental law and governance.
There’s no one approach that is going to succeed in mitigating
environmental degradation and climate change, it is a team effort spread
across many different sectors of society. Come learn about this diverse
landscape of careers in which you can address environmental issues from
different approaches, and the skills needed to succeed.
The conversation will include information about:
• The approaches different sectors take in shaping environmental policy
• What kind of job titles and opportunities should you be looking for to
break into this field?
• How can earning a master’s degree help you in this field?
• How can the Masters of Environmental Policy help you build the skills
you need, and why consider studying environmental policy in China?
*ALUM 1-2-1: Individual Conversations with* *Tatiana Sherman 05F*
*Wednesday, Nov. 13th, 1:30-4:30,* at CORC, 3rd Floor Library
Students and recent grads are invited to schedule an informal
conversation with Tatiana Sherman 05F, currently *Senior Program
Advisor* at*Duke's Environmental Policy Master's Program in China*, with
*experience living in China*, and *homeschooling* two children.
Possible Topics that Tatiana would love to discuss with you include
(bring other topics too!):
• The winding path – how to bring diverse experiences into your personal
narrative to build a path that makes sense to you and others
• Go international - learn about other places and bring that experience
with you no matter where you land
• More specifically, how do you use a background in East Asian or
Chinese Studies to a career based in the US?
• The world is inter-disciplinary – bring the Hampshire learning mindset
with you and it will serve you well
*TATIANA'S BIO:*
Tatiana started her life after Hampshire living and traveling in
southeastern Chinese cities for two years, while also raising her young
daughter. This time learning to be a stay-at-home parent in China
solidified her commitment to alternative education methods, and upon
returning to the U.S. she continued to homeschool her two daughters
until 2016. During this journey, she worked at several other ventures
including waiting tables, training to be a birth doula, and tutoring
high school students in Mandarin Chinese, writing and test prep.
Tatiana is currently bringing all the skills from these diverse
experiences to her work at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke
University. Officially re-entering the workforce as a Staff Assistant in
the Career Services Office, where she learned about career counseling,
she was soon promoted to serve as the Senior Program Coordinator of the
International Master of Environmental Policy (iMEP) program, which is
based at Duke’s campus in China, Duke Kunshan University.
Tatiana transferred to Hampshire where she studied Religion, Chinese
Language and Culture, and Gender. All of these areas came together
during a study abroad semester in Yunnan Province, China when Tatiana
did an ethnography on a Christian house church, which led into her Div
III project on Christianity in China. As a student, she was a Counselor
Advocate with the Wellness Center, working with peers who were dealing
with sexual and relationship violence, substance abuse, eating disorders
and more. She was also a founding member of the Gin & Tonics a cappella
group.
