**** MEDIA ADVISORY ****
*UMass Amherst Sustainability ‘Trash Sort’ *
*DATE:* Tuesday, Oct. 24 and Wednesday, Oct. 25
*TIME:* 5:30-7 p.m.
*WHERE:* UMass Amherst Office of Waste Management, 151 Tillson Farm
Road
Undergraduates from the UMass Eco-Rep program will don protective suits and
sort through trash taken from four areas of the University of Massachusetts
Amherst campus to illustrate that students can do more to divert
recyclables and compostable material away from local landfills.
The eco-reps will empty trash bins from North Village Apartments, Lincoln
Apartments, North Apartments and the Morrill Science complex at the Office
of Waste Management’s Tillson Farm facility. Once the materials are sorted,
the eco-reps will calculate the percentage of the waste that could have
been diverted from the landfill.
This information will be used to identify ways to encourage more recycling
and composting and provide a baseline to gauge
improvements.
The UMass Amherst Eco-Rep Program is a student-centered educational program
that trains undergraduates to foster environmental literacy in the campus
community and translates that new understanding into more environmentally
friendly behavior.
